The big winners in are gamemakers, who dominated sales in the week since the new iPhone 3G hit stores.
Seven of the top 10 paid applications, including the top five, were video games, led by Sega's Super Monkey Ball, a rolling racing game.iphone 6 plus replacement screen Even among the free iPhone and iPod Touch applications, which include popular social networking sites like Facebook and the Internet radio service Pandora, the top title is Tap Tap Revenge, a rhythm game similar to Guitar Hero.
It's not a complete surprise, given that one third of the applications initially available for downloading are games. But the strong showing by games at the top of the sales chart underscores the iPhone's viability as a gaming platform, as well as overall consumer interest in mobile video games.
Sales figures won't be available for several weeks, but Apple reported that 10 million applications were downloaded in the first three days.
, president of Sega of America, said he expects to sell 1 million downloads of Super Monkey Ball on the iPhone. He said he's not surprised by the success of games on the new smart phone.
"This is a very viable platform," Jeffery said. "We're just scratching the surface on the iPhone. There's way more we can get out of the iPhone as we learn the software developer kit."
Jeffery said he believes a certain number of consumers will buy the iPod Touch primarily as a gaming device, pitting it against established portable gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and the Sony PlayStation Portable.
The iPhone and iPod Touch, however, still have a way to go to compete with the DS, which has sold more than 20 million units in the United States, including 8.5 million last year.iphone 6 plus replacement screen So far, Apple has sold 7 million iPhones worldwide.
But game developers are excited about the opportunity to write for the iPhone. Not only is it a device with mass appeal, but it's extremely robust with a strong processor, touch screen and accelerometer, allowing designers to write games that are far more dynamic than traditional mobile titles.
"We really believed in this platform in a big way and we spent a lot of investment in it, so we're pleasantly surprised," said , vice president of publishing for EA Mobile, which has two titles in the top 10.
, a spokeswoman for mobile game manufacturer
"Even games that we've brought over to the iPhone are completely new games because of the size increase," Chao said. "There's more graphics, more levels and game play. We haven't seen anything like this since the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable."
